Rachel – Flood Risk Management

Profile from STEMNET’s Leading Light series of a new generation of young people using their STEM skills to push the boundaries, and to make the world a better and more exciting place to live.

“Flooding can have a devastating effect on people’s lives but there are many people working behind the scenes to minimise its impact.”

Rachel Gerrard

Rachel Gerrard has succeeded in turning a love of damming streams on the beach as a child into a career as a civil engineer in Flood Risk Management.

Flooding has become a greater threat to people and property across the UK in recent years and flood protection measures protect homes and lives. Working for the Environment Agency in Cumbria, Rachel’s innovative work ensures that the area’s flood defences can cope with increased rainfall.
