Leisure & Lifestyle

How do you spend your leisure time? Playing or watching football? Preparing for the Olympics – on the Wii? Plotting that killer outfit? Cooking up a storm in the kitchen? But all of this sounds like fun and nothing to do with science and mathematics – well maybe it’s time to think beyond the footballer, the winning athlete, the model and the chef…

Before the model walks down the runway in the latest designer gear it’s likely that some highly creative minds were working out the design of the clothes; but consider for a minute the minds that created the type of fabric, the right colour and texture for the make-up and hair products that won’t catch light, stick together or ruin your hair in the process. And what about the lighting, the music and the millions of camera lenses, poised for that perfect picture, which are then relayed to thousands of newspapers and magazines world wide. Who makes all that possible?

Translate that to the boots you wear and the football you kick or, the quality of the food that we use to cook with, the person that came up with go-faster swimming suits and even the technology behind the Wii and you are probably starting to realise that leisure isn’t just about the evenings and weekends.

There are plenty of jobs in the leisure and lifestyle section that are done by scientists and engineers but just as many challenging roles for psychologists, fitness coaches, hotel managers, sales executives and designers in all walks of life and all of them benefit from a good scientific, mathematical and technological base. Read on to find out more about careers in this section…
