Rhys – Research engineer

Rhys uses his maths skills within his role as a Research engineer to construct mathematical models of aircraft structures and fuel systems, solving equations relating to electrostatic hazards in aircraft.

With A-levels in maths, physics and chemistry, and a BSc Joint Honours degree in mathematics and physics, Rhys aquired the skills he needed to go into a career as a research engineer looking at the effects of lightning, combining his interests of research and engineering.

Rhys acknowledges the fact that there are so many areas that your maths skills can take you into as he says: “Studying maths at a higher level does not mean you have to become a maths teacher or an accountant – there are many other exciting opportunities out there and studying maths can keep these options open to you”.
