These activities were produced for a STEM careers event and could be adapted to be used in a variety of situations. The characters from the “What might you be?” quiz are used in two ways:
- Match the character to the job title – Each character represents a job that uses science or maths knowledge in some way. Students match the job title to the character.
- Match the statement to the character – Each character has one or two statements which highlight how science and/or maths are used in their job. Students match the statements to the characters.
Both activities are of most value when used to open up a wider conversation around the types and range of jobs science, maths and, indeed STEM, qualifications can lead to. Download the material to help you run these activities below.
Exploring physics, uncovering choice
The Institute of Physics has put together a workshop pack of activities which is freely available to download from their website. It aims to encourage staff to work together in providing a consistent approach to careers advice and guidance in their school. It will also help teachers to build on their own knowledge of physics-based careers and in turn, help students to make informed choices based on accurate information.
The pack includes instructions on how to lead the workshop, a CD of presentation slides, activities for use within the workshop or classroom, as well as the tools to start developing an action plan for the whole school.

If you are able to access STEM role models you may also want to try a “speed networking” activity where students have four or five minutes to quiz each role model on their job. Younger students may be more comfortable interviewing the role models in pairs and asking people to bring along an item related to their job can help to get the students started.
