Helena’s career profile

When I was about 12 I wanted to be a chartered accountant…not quite the typical answer most 12 year old girls give! I ended up achieving a BSc (Hons) in Computing and now work for IBM as an IT Service Manager.

I joined IBM as a grad in 1998 and have worked in a number of roles since joining including a software tester, IT specialist, team leader and currently as an IT Service Manager.  While working, I also completed an MSc in Software Engineering at Oxford University.

Today, I’m responsible for managing IT services to ensure that the technology and infrastructure is in place to enable our customers to perform their business. I thoroughly enjoy my job and am proud of the work I do to help other people – be it through my work in customer service or through the mentoring relationships I have.

I was initially attracted to working in this job because of the flexibility in the role and the fact that every day is different. I love having a challenge and each day brings new ones – be it helping customers, problem solving or organising projects and work.

I work flexibly which for me means that I start at 7.30 in the morning and finish around 4.30 most days, except Fridays when I leave early around 3pm to make the most of the weekend.  Working flexibly also means I get to spend time (both in work hours and out) on some of the community projects I do – helping encourage students to take an interest in science and technology, and volunteering at my local zoo!

The advice I would give to anyone wanting to follow this path is to show some initiative, have dreams and follow them. Don’t be put off by set backs, just find another path!
