Sue Smith – Football

Sue is an English international footballer who plays for Doncaster Rovers Belles and England. She is an experienced left-sided winger or forward.


What made you want to become an athlete?

I used to go and watch my brother play which got me interested initially, but if you ask my parents they would say I was kicking a ball before I could walk!

What has been your proudest moment to date?

Representing the FIFA World All Stars.

What does your typical day involve?

I train every single day! I usually train in the morning and then go to work in the afternoon, before heading back to train with the club in the evening.

Who or what inspires you to get up in a morning?

To strive to be successful in whatever I choose to do.

What do your friends and family think about what you do?

They love it! My friends and family are extremely supportive and come to watch all of my games.

How did you get to where you are today?

I managed to complete my education and got a degree in Sports Studies from Edge Hill University, despite being scouted to play for England at 16 years of age.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of following in your path?

Listen and remember that you are always learning, and above all else – enjoy!

How do you use sports science to support your training/performance?

Our training programmes is completely based on sports science, including nutritional strategies.

Are there any specific areas of science that you use to help you to maximise your performance?

Physiology, nutrition, fitness tests, and fitness programmes are all useful to help maximise my performance.

What kind of hobbies do you do to relax?

I like to watch films, go shopping, listen to music and watch other sports.

Have there been any embarrassing moments?

I once kicked the corner flag and fell over during a Premier League game – oops!
