Today the lives of celebrities are played out in magazines and papers, and if we need to know more, most of them have a book deal! We know a bit about the journalists, writers and editors but who else gets involved? Who formulates the most efficient and environmentally friendly paper source and invents the best ink that doesn’t come off on your hands and glossy magazines that double up as useful umbrellas? And it’s not all about the science behind printing, you can get e-books too and those were probably designed by engineers.

Whatever your tastes in music might be, these days music really is all around us. But think beyond the artist on the stage and a whole host of questions pop up. You heard it on the radio, but how does it get there? Who decides what’s hot and who is looking out for the rights of that undiscovered artist? Once a great track is discovered how can we be sure that the right people will hear it? Consider the sound engineer who is in the studio whilst the artist is recording, and the software developer who works out how the music becomes available and the best format. A music publisher would need to be fairly switched on to financing a record – you’d need a head for figures to make sure the artist gets what they’re due and still work out how to make a profit.
